A Way in the Wilderness

God will make a way Where there seems to be no way He works in ways we cannot see He will make a way for me

By a roadway in the wilderness, He'll lead me And rivers in the desert will I see Heaven and Earth will fade but His Word will still remain And He will do something new today

Born out of heartache, singer Don Moen penned these words on a flight to his young nephew’s funeral. The truths of Isaiah 43:19 saturate his lyrics:

Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall sprout; shall you not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, rivers in the desert.

And every time I hear the song, “God will make a way,” I think of the loss of our son. How God is making a way for us to live with purpose, to face each day even when our strength is gone.

This new thing that God promises in verse 19 may be just a sprout. It could be so small we may overlook it or trample it. It may need to be seen through eyes of faith.

Are you looking for the way God is making for you? Are you drinking from the refreshment He provides?

God already made a way. He put waters in thirsty places. Jesus is that way. Remember when Christ responded to Thomas’ question in John 14 about where Jesus was going? Jesus reminded Thomas, “I am the way . . .”

This morning physical pain woke me up early. I thought of the new widow whose wedding anniversary is this Sunday, just a day after her husband’s burial. I thought of the young widower who lost his wife recently to a cruel battle with cancer. I thought of so many I know who face relentless pain and limitation day after day. I cried. I prayed.

God, I pray for all of us who are living through searing loss, consuming heartaches, and ruthless pain. Pour out your rivers of grace on us, turn our hearts towards you. Be our way in our directionless wilderness of our days. May our hearts crave you and you alone. May the preciousness of your presence abundantly satisfy.

How is God making a way through your wilderness?
